Hall of Honor
Dr. Harry Gutelius served as Athletic Director from 2002 to 2008. In that role, he oversaw the resurrection of Eastern’s Cross Country and Men’s Lacrosse programs and was influential in the construction of the two turf fields on campus. When he took leadership, the department had four full-time coaches and less than 190 student-athletes. Harry empowered coaches to build their programs. In 2018, Eastern will have nearly 400 athletes competing on 21 teams.
While AD, he continued to work as a Professor in Eastern’s Department of Education. When he stepped away from Athletics to an increased role on the Faculty, he continued as an advocate for athletics and for student-athletes. He was instrumental in helping student-athletes find solutions to scheduling issues and continued to lobby for the growth of athletics as a means to maintaining the health of the University.
