Box Score ORLANDO, Fla. - Eastern Women's Lacrosse fell to Neumann University, 14-6, Saturday afternoon at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The Eagles let up a nine-goal run by the Knights that span both halves leading to their second loss of the season.
"We did some really good things but just couldn't keep momentum," said Head Coach
Kim Campbell. "We managed to hang around, but we can't make mistakes that take us out of the game."
The game started out as a back and forth battle with each team trading goals. The Knights (1-0) got on the board first when Jordan Hopkins found the back of the net to give Neumann the 1-0 lead. Just over 30 seconds later Eastern (0-2) responded when
Stephanie Hogan netted her third goal of the season pulling the Eagles even at 1-1. Both teams traded goals again just over 30 seconds apart from each other to tie the game at 2-2 less than three minutes into the game.
Neumann broke the tie and took a 3-2 lead with under 20 minutes to play in the half.
Anna Charlebois had a chance to tie the game midway through the first half when she intercepted a pass and took off down the field, but the Knights defense caused a turnover to stop the offensive counter attack.
"That was a big scoring chance for us," continued Campbell. "We need to convert those kinds of opportunities because you don't get them often and when good teams give you chances you have to convert."
With under ten minutes left to play Neumann struck twice with goals less than 20 seconds apart from each other to stretch its lead to 5-2. The Knights capped off the first half scoring with 17 seconds left to take a 6-2 lead into the locker room.
Cortney Andes stood tall for Eastern making 11 saves in the first half alone to keep the Eagles in the game.
Neumann continued its goal run scoring five in a row extending the lead to 11-2 to open the second half. Hogan finally broke the scoring drought for the Eagles when she tallied two of the next three goals bringing the score to 11-5. Step Biancucci tallied a goal in between Hogan's two and Charlebois closed out the scoring for Eastern with under four minutes left to play to make the score 13-6.
The Knights closed out the scoring with under a minute to play to make the score final at 14-6.
Hogan led all Eagles scoring three goals bringing her total to five on the season. Charlebois,
Julie Haggan, and Biancucci each tallied one goal apiece.
Hopkins led Neumann scoring six goals on the afternoon.
"We have to learn from this game and continue to grow," concluded Campbell. "While we did some good things in this game but we also did a lot of bad things that hurt us, and those are the mistakes we have to fix before our next game."
Eastern hosts Alvernia on March 9th at 3:30 pm.
