In the program's first season of competition, Eastern University Flag Football will travel to Arlington, Va. to compete for an Atlantic East Conference Championship. The Eagles (13-3) are the second seed in the four-team tournament.
Eastern will play third-seeded Centenary University in the opening game. The winner of that game will wait to take on the winner of the contest between top-seeded Marymount University and fourth-seeded Immaculata University. The championship game is slated to start at 6:00 PM.Â
Eastern won both regular-season tests against Centenary. The Eagles split their two games against Immaculata and lost both their games against the host Saints.
The second of those losses, a 12-0 home loss, is Eastern's only blemish since they dropped two on their opening weekend.
Since those first two games, the Eagles have found a balanced offense with rookie quarterback
Kira Green throwing for 16 touchdowns and over 1500 yards and
Kyla Massenburg running the ball. Massenburg has a team-high nine rushing touchdowns.
Damiyae Moyet and
Jeriyah Johnson have each caught over 40 passes this season.
While the Eastern offense has been solid, that group has often been the beneficiary of a defensive group that puts pressure on quarterbacks and takes the ball away.
Trinity Upton has ten interceptions, Johnson and
Dominique Geiger each have four, and
Stephanie White has three. Massenburg has 7.5 sacks and is a constant threat around the quarterback. The eagles have 27 intercetions and nearly 500 yards of returns on those picks.
The top-seeded Saints come into the weekend with a 13-0 mark and have not allowed a score by an opposing offense over the year. Their quarterback, Cara Vollmer has thrown for 35 touchdowns and only three interceptions. One of those picks came in their 12-0 win over Eastern in early April. The Eagles had more first downs than Marymount in that game, but the Saints found the end zone in the second quarter and again late in the fourth to secure the win.
Marymount won the 2024 Atlantic East title.
Saturday's Games will be played at Bishop O'Connell High School in Arlington.
