ARLINGTON, Va. - In its first-ever season, Eastern Flag Football not only made the playoffs as the No. 2 seed in the Atlantic East, but advanced all the way to the Atlantic East Championship game. On Saturday, the Eagles shut out Centenary in the Atlantic East Semifinal, 33-0, before battling to the end in a 12-0 loss to the Marymount Saints in the championship bout.
The Eagles opened the day with its third shutout win over Centenary. Eastern outscored the Cyclones 93-0 in their three meetings this season. First-year quarterback
Kira Green threw for 100 yards on seven completions to go along with two touchdown passes. Green also ran the ball six times for 46 yards and a score. Fellow first-year
Kyla Massenburg finished with 27 yards on the ground and 34 through the air, scoring both a rushing and receiving touchdown.
Damiyae Moyet also finished with a 19-yard touchdown reception. Defensively, Massenburg led the Eagles with six tackles, while
Stephanie White recorded a pair of interceptions, including another pick six.
Eastern struck early in the semifinal. After 17 and 15 yards scrambles from Green, together with a 15-yard pass to
Jeriyah Johnson to move the Eagles into Centenary territory, Green hit Moyet from 19 yards away to put the Eagles ahead 6-0. The Eagles converted the one-point try to make it a 7-0 lead.
The Eagles went on to score on its second drive after forcing a Centenary punt. With good field position, the Eagles needed just four plays to find the end zone again, this time on a nine-yard run from Massenburg. The defense got in on the action next, as White intercepted a pass deep in the red zone and scampered in seven yards, untouched, into the end zone. Eastern's third successful one-point try increased its lead to 21-0.
Geiger picked off another Centenary pass just two plays later, and the Eagles extended its lead to 27-0 just before halftime on a 1-yard touchdown run from Green.
The Eagles scored one more touchdown in the second half to seal the shutout victory as Green hit Massenburg from 16 yards out to put Eastern ahead 33-0. The Eagles' defense put the clamps on the Centenary offense from there. Eastern held Centenary to just 17 yards of total offense.
The championship was a knock-down, drag out fight from start to finish, with both defenses making huge plays. It was the host Saints who struck first, picking off a Green pass on Eastern's first possession. The Eastern defense, however, answered with an interception of its own in the red zone. A Cara Vollmer pass was deflected by Massenburg at the line of scrimmage, and the ball fell into the waiting hands of White, who returned the ball all the way to midfield. intercepted by
Stephanie White. However, the Eagles could not convert, punting the ball back to the Saints to begin the second quarter.
With the game still scoreless, the Saints looked to drive down the field and take the lead into halftime, but the Eagles recorded another red zone interception. Another Vollmer pass deflected off her receivers' hands and Moyet grabbed it out of the air, scampering deep into Marymount territory to give the Eagles great field position. Again, however, the Marymount defense stood tall, and the score remained 0-0 at the halftime break.
The Eagles got a big play early in the third quarter, as Moyet caught a perfect pass from Green at midfield to pick up a huge first down and move the chains. But Marymount forced another turnover on downs, and from that moment on, grabbed the momentum.
Late in the third quarter, a huge scramble from Vollmer put the Saint deep in Eastern territory, and they eventually scored to take a 6-0 lead.
Eastern's defense forced a third red zone turnover, this time on an interception from White, but Marymount's defense delivered in the game's biggest moment, picking off Green deep in Eastern territory and taking it the house to put the Saints up 12-0, ending a tremendous first season for Eastern Flag Football.
The Eagles finish their first season with a 14-4 record, which included 11 shutout victories. Three of the Eagles' four losses this season came against the Marymount Saints, who gave up just eight points all season long.
