Women's Lacrosse Claims Thriller in Double OT

Box Score ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Anna Charlebois scored her seventh goal of the contest fifty-five seconds into the second overtime to lift Eastern University Women's Lacrosse to a 17-16 home win over the visiting Houghton College Highlanders.

The Eagles needed an 11th-hour goal from Sam Brennan to reach overtime. The Eagles fell behind 16-15 with 10 and a half minutes left in regulation and were on the defensive for an extended period of time. After Eva Ehrhardt forced a turnover, the Eagles pushed the ball deep intp the offensive end and Head Coach Kim Campbell took her final timeout of regulation to set up a play.

With the Houghton defense keying on Charlebois and Julie Haggan in front of the goal, Liz Brennan needed to find someone else cutting to the cage. As it turned out, that person was her twin. Sam caught the ball at six meters and made astrong step toward goal before ripping home the tying goal with 2:05 on the clock.

The Eagles won the ensuing draw and held for a final shot. Houghton goalie Sarah Olandt matched Liz Brennan's stick on the final shot to send the game to overtime.

Houghton won the opening draw of the first overtime, but Sam Brennan forced a turnover and the Eagles had the only three shots of the first overtime. None of those shots, however, found their way to the net.

Stephanie Arnold won the draw after a fierce battle on the ground to start the second overtime. Liz Brennan took the ball behind the goal and waited patiently for Charlebois to come open. When she did, Brennan found her and Charlebois put away her 38th goal of the year for the win.

At the outset, the game did not look like it was going to have drama. The Eagles led 13-7 at halftime and scored the first goal of the second half. Eastern won 13-of-21 draws in the first half and had a decided advantage in possessions.

The visitors made defensive adjustments for the second half and found their rhythm offensively. Led by standout senior Jennifer Zacchigna took a 16-15 lead with a 9-1 run.

Charlebois scored six of her seven goals in the opening half. Liz Brennan, who finished with six goals and three assists, had four goals at the half. Haggan had three goals on her 21st birthday.

"We wanted Anna to have the ball." Campbell said after the match. "She was perfect in that moment. Her composure, her timing, her speed, and the power on the shot was the defining moment of the game." Charlebois had five assists and now has 21 in her senior season. she has 181 goals and 49 assists in her career.

The Eagles will host FDU-Florham, the defending MAC Freedom Champions, on Wednesday at 4:00.
