ST. DAVIDS, Pa.—Eastern University Baseball tallied double-digit hits for the third day in a row, but couldn't keep pace with the Widener University Pride in Wednesday afternoon's non-conference game.
The Eagles fell 11-5 after the Pride put up big numbers in the fourth and seventh innings. The Pride clubbed three home runs, including a two-run homer in the fourth and a three-run jack over the scoreboard in left field in the seventh. Eastern tabbed 10 hits while Widener had 12.
Timmy Gorton led the Eagles with a 3-for-5 day at the plate, scoring twice and knocking in two runs. Gorton's batting average this season increased to .341. Angelo Kelly hit 2-for-4 with an RBI from the leadoff spot, Eric Rossi went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Cal Sanelli, a late add to the starting lineup, went 2-for-4 with a triple.
The Eagles pounced on the Pride in the bottom of the first with Gorton's RBI-double plating McMenamin and Rossi's single up the middle scoring Gorton. Eastern went ahead 3-1 in the second after Sanelli motored to third with a triple to right and then got batted in by a sac fly from Kelly.
The Pride tagged the Eagles for four runs in the fourth and then five more in the seventh, and the Eagles weren't able to recover. Eastern used the non-conference game as a chance to get reserve players more opportunities. Nine Eagles took the mound.
Eastern (9-15) finally gets a day off on Thursday after playing seven games in five days. The Eagles pick up conference play on Friday with Misericordia University, the No. 15 team in the country.
