PURCHASE, N.Y.—Eastern University Baseball battled the
Manhattanville College Valiants to a split of Saturday's doubleheader.
Manhattanville took game one of the season series back on March 13.
Eastern fell 5-4 in game one on Saturday in eight innings,
but bounced back to a 9-5 win in game two. Manhattanville won game one in
unconventional walk-off fashion with a bases-loaded hit by pitch. In game two,
the Valiants threatened again with the bases loaded in the bottom of the
seventh, but Eastern's Andrew Check stepped in and recorded the one-out save by
striking out Manhattanville's final batter.
Designated hitter Eric Rossi led the Eagles with three hits,
including a double and a solo home run. Rossi now has a team-best two homers
this season.
The Eagles got on the board with two runs in the top of the
third. Timmy Gorton singled to center to score Angelo Kelly. Ryan McMenamin
then stole third base and was batted in on an RBI-single by Rossi.
Manhattanville tied the game in the fourth, but Eastern
regained the lead on Rossi's solo home run to right field in the sixth. The
Valiants retaliated with two more runs in the bottom of the inning to take the
4-3 lead.
Eastern knotted the game at 4-4 with one out in the seventh.
Andrew Boykin mashed a pinch-hit double and then his pinch runner Jake Bunjo
scored on a McMenamin single up the middle.
Eagles' pitcher Tyler Sterkenburg got into a jam in the
bottom of the inning and Manhattanville loaded the bases. Ryan Ellison was
brought in to diffuse the situation, but a pitch got away from him and plunked
Valiants' Jeff Moskowitz which forced Jake McGrath home for the walk-off run.
The Eagles quickly forgot about the ending of game one and
bounced back in game two with five runs in the first three innings. Chris
Marinaccio, who pitched five strong, earned his second win.
Eagles' catcher Zach Quast batted in two runs with a single
through the gap between third and short in the second inning. In the third
inning, Gorton clubbed an RBI-single, Check registered a bases-loaded walk and
Joseph de los Santos brought home a run with a fielder's choice. The Eagles
sent eight batters to the plate in the inning with the only hit being Gorton's
single.
Manhattanville pulled within one with four runs in their
next two frames, but two runs in the sixth and seventh by Eastern helped put
the game out of reach. Gorton and Joe Grato
had RBIs in the sixth and Mike McCracken had his first collegiate hit in the
seventh, a two-run single down the left-field line.
The Eagles scored nine runs on seven hits and seven walks in
the game.
Manhattanville loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom
of the seventh, but Check struck out the potential tying-run swinging to end
the ball game.
Eastern (8-13, 5-6 Freedom) travels to King's College on
Monday to finish the season series with the Monarchs.
