ST. DAVIDS, Pa.—A crooked number in the first inning of Saturday's doubleheader paved the way for Eastern University Baseball to take both of those conference games from the King's College Monarchs.
The Eastern Eagles (7-12, 4-5 Freedom) jumped on the Monarchs with eight runs in the bottom of the first en route to a 10-2 win in game one. In the second game, the Eagles trailed by two, scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth and held on for a 4-3 win.
Game One (EU 10, KC 2) (Box Score)
Eastern's Austin Little earned his first win of the season, pitching five innings while striking out two and walking none. The Monarchs tagged Little for two runs on a double in the top of the first but went scoreless the rest of the game.
The wheels fell off for King's in the bottom of the first. Eastern's first two batters, Angelo Kelly and Ryan McMenamin, both walked and then Timmy Gorton singled to load the bases. Grato knocked in Kelly with a base-hit to center field. Tommy Strazza got hit by a pitch to force in McMenamin, and Monarchs' starting pitcher Mike Krieger was yanked after a third of an inning. The Eagles then scored a run on a fielder's choice and a walk and really broke the game open with Andrew Check's 2-RBI double to left center. Check's hit turned the lineup over and Kelly came to the plate for the second time in the inning. This time he singled to center. Check and Zach Quast scored on the play to make it 8-2 Eastern still with only one out.
The Eagles didn't do any more damage in the inning, but added a run in the third on a sac fly by Check and a run in the sixth on an error.
Korey McCormack worked out of a jam to pitch a scoreless sixth inning for the Eagles, and then Jordan Miller followed that up with a 1-2-3 seventh inning to close out the game.
Game Two (EU 4, KC 3) (Box Score)
Ryan Kehr struck out three batters in five innings en route to his second win on the mound this season. Kehr conceded an unearned run in the second and fifth innings.
Eastern's bats finally put runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Check pounded a double to the left-field fence that scored Pete Crawford. Kelly and McMenamin then each slapped RBI-singles to the outfield to put Eastern ahead 3-2.
In the sixth, Tommy Strazza hit a ground-rule double down the left field line and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Pinch hitter Craig Stanley smacked his first collegiate hit, a knock up the middle, and scored Strazza from third.
Eagles' closer Nick Centeno got into a bind in the bottom of the seventh, but he got some assistance in the outfield. Check made a diving grab in center field that allowed a run on the sac fly, but denied King's an extra base hit and gave them their second out. With a runner on first and second and two outs, Centeno induced a groundout to short to end the game.
Eastern plays a doubleheader at Manhattanville College on Sunday.
