KINGSTON, Pa.—Eastern University Baseball earned a split in Friday's
doubleheader matinee with the Wilkes University Colonels. After dropping game
one 5-2, Eastern bounced back to a 4-3 win in game two.
The Eagles took the 4-3 lead in the top of the seventh after
an overthrow by the Colonels' pitcher allowed Angelo Kelly to score.
In game one, Colonels' starting pitcher Patrick Condo had
the Eagles' number, allowing just four hits while going the distance. The Eagles
got to Condo in the first and second innings, scoring a run in each, but were
shut out the rest of the way. Joe Grato batted in Kelly with a double in the
first, and then in the second inning, Andrew Check scored on an error. The
Eagles loaded the bases with two outs in the third, but couldn't bring home a
run.
Wilkes broke the game open with four runs off Eagles'
starting pitcher Austin Little in the bottom of the fourth. The Colonels added
an insurance run in the fifth and held on for the 5-2 win.
In game two, Kelly sparked the Eagles' offense from the
leadoff spot with three hits in four at-bats. Kelly is batting .375 on the
year.
Freshman catcher Timmy Gorton added two hits, and Ryan
McMenamin, Joe Grato, Andrew Check and Alex Doelp each had a base hit.
Tommy Strazza was on the bump for 5.1 innings for the Eagles
and took a no-decision while allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits and
two walks. Nick Centeno moved from designated hitter to pitcher and picked up
the win after getting two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Andrew Check then left
center field in the bottom of the seventh to go to the mound where he earned
the save.
Wilkes jumped on Eastern for two runs in the first, but Eastern
tallied three runs in the third. Grato doubled to left center to bring in two
of the runs.
Eastern's lead went away in the bottom of the sixth after a Wilkes
sac fly knotted the game at 3-3.
In the top of the seventh, Wilkes got the first two Eastern batters
out and then made a pitching change. Kelly kept the inning alive with a double
to left. McMenamin, the next batter, played a ball back to the mound, but
Wilkes pitcher Tyler Piccotti's throw sailed over first allowing Kelly to
score.
Wilkes had the potential tying run reach third base with no
out, but Check got out of the jam by retiring the next three batters.
Eastern (4-9) was scheduled to play at home on Saturday against Wilkes for the third and final game of the series, but Eastern's field is currently unplaybable because of heavy rainfall. No make-up time has been announced yet.
