KINGSTON, Pa.--Eastern Baseball split Saturday's conference doubleheader with Wilkes University losing game one 6-5, and winning game two 7-2.
Eastern's Tyler Orr and Greg DeSarro launched home runs in the split.
The Eagles dominated game two, allowing the Wilkes Colonels to score in just one inning. However, the Eagles lost game one with a walk-off grand slam--a batter's dream and a relief pitcher's worst nightmare.
The Eagles scored five runs on six hits in game one, with Tyler Orr and Ryan McMenamin each batting in two runs. Orr's two RBIs came on a home run in the sixth inning over a net in left field.
Eastern starting pitcher Ernie Stiegler allowed two runs in the first inning and was relieved in the second inning by Austin Little who pitched the next five innings. Little held the Colonels scoreless while allowing three hits and striking out three.
The Eagles scored their first run in the fifth after Ryan McMenamin tripled to score Anthony Messina. Orr gave Eastern the lead in the top of the sixth with his two-run home run, his fourth of the season. The Eagles scored two more runs in the sixth with an RBI-single by McMenamin and an RBI fielder's choice by Stephen Valentine.
With the 5-2 lead, the Eagles walked the first three batters in bottom of the seventh, and the following batter, Stephen Ruch, cleared the bags with the grand slam. Ruch batted in all six of Wilkes' runs in the first game.
In game two, the Eagles bounced back with seven innings from Lucas Bremerman. Bremerman struck out four batters while walking none. He shut the Colonels out in all but the fourth inning, when he allowed two runs.
On offense, Eastern's Greg DeSarro batted in three RBIs and Mark Royer two. DeSarro hit his first home run of the season, hitting a bomb to left center. Eric Rossi and Tyler Orr each added an RBI.
Rossi tripled in the first to score leadoff man Brendan Spall. Rossi later scored in the inning on a DeSarro ground out.
The Eagles scored four in the top of the third with an RBI-double by Tyler Orr followed by DeSarro's home run. Royer knocked in an RBI-double to put Eastern up 6-0.
Wilkes scored two in the bottom of the fourth, but Bremerman settled down to keep them scoreless the rest of the way. The Eagles scored an insurance run in the seventh and held on for the 7-2 win.
The Eagles are now 5-9 in Freedom Conference play, trailing the 6-8 Colonels. The Eagles look to draw even in the standings with the Colonels as they finish the series at home on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
