ST. DAVIDS,Pa.- With solid pitching and patient hitting,
Eastern University Baseball cruised to a doubleheader sweep of Valley
Forge Christian. The Eagles won the opener 11-1 and took the nightcap
15-0.
The Eagles took advantage of an undermanned Patriot staff
with disciplined hitting throughout the day. Despite having only five
hits in the opener, Eastern scored in each of the five innings to end
the game early. Eastern had 12 batters walk and another three players
reach base by getting hit by a pitch. Mark Royer walked in each of his
plate appearances. All nine position players who started the game picked
up at least one RBI. Ryan McMenamin was the only Eastern player with
two hits in game one.
Valley Forge starter David Smith was over 100 pitches in the fourth inning.
Eastern
starter Jordan Miller allowed only a single unearned run in the third
inning. He allowed only two hits and a walk while striking out four to
pick up the five inning win. He had fewer than 60 pitches and was
consistently out in front in the count.
Game two starter Korey
McKormack picked up right where Miller left off. McCormack struck out
six hitters and did not walk a batter in four innings of work. The
sophomore right-hander gave up two hits in the first inning, but escaped
the jam with the help of a strong relay throw from McMenamin to get a
runner at second. He struck out the final batter of the first and all
three hitters he faced in the second.
The Eagles, who pounded out
9 hits in game two, scored two in the second and broke the game open
with six in the third. Anthony Messina homered to left to start the
inning, and Tyler Orr hit a two RBI double for the big blow of the
inning. The Eagles scored seven more runs in the fourth to create the
final margin.
McMenamin, Orr, and Brendan Spall each finished the game with three RBIs. Catcher Greg DeSarro, who is moving up Eastern's career RBI list, walked twice and was the only position player in the game not to record an RBI.
Devon Ziegenfuss, who started the game in right
field, came on to close and struck out a pair of Patriots. With some
injuries on the staff, Ziegnefuss has been throwing side-sessions, and
today was the perfect day to give the hard-throwing right-hander a
chance to see live hitters.
The Eagles (12-11) are slated to host
Wilkes in the opening game of a critical Freedom Conference series
tomorrow. Follow EUEagles on Twitter or check back here for any
