Baseball Wins Twice With Walk-Offs

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.--Eastern University Baseball earned two conference wins in dramatic fashion on Monday, defeating Delaware Valley College 8-7 in each game.

First baseman Dave Prager played walk-off hero in game one, smacking a bases-loaded single off the fence in left center, and in game two, Devon Ziegenfuss singled up the middle to score the game-winner.

With two wins Monday, the Eagles improve to 15-10 this season and an even 6-6 in the Freedom Conference.

Eagles' head coach Matt Midkiff joked that the game-ending heroics were nerve-racking for him, but would be a confidence-booster for the team. "One thing we've tried to instill in our players is a no-quit attitude," he said. "Those games were two situations where things were kind of rolling against us, and we could have packed it in, but we put together two really good innings where everybody had really good at-bats. We found a way to win . . . and I think that can springboard us down the stretch to end the year."

After getting walloped at Delaware Valley 15-3 on Thursday, the Eagles started both games Monday out on the wrong foot, allowing five runs in the first two innings of both games.

"Thursday was not a great effort, so we really needed to bounce back, and then we got down early in both games," Midkiff said. "So it's one of things where you could quit, but the guys showed some resiliency and fought through."

Midkiff also noted that despite allowing early leads, the starting pitchers for the Eagles kept the game from getting out of hand and kept the Eagles in the game.

He also said that the relievers did a good job stabilizing the game in the middle innings. Relief pitcher John Taylor came in to relieve Ernie Stiegler in the fifth inning of game one, inherited two runners with one out, but was able to get out of the inning without allowing a run.

Eastern trailed 7-5 going into the bottom of the seventh in game one. Brendan Spall started the rally by taking a pitch off his body, Dillon Schwartzer then reached on an error, and Andre Butler poked an infield single (his fourth hit of the game) to load the bases with no outs. Scott Renauro then earned a walk to cut Delaware Valley's lead to 7-6. Dave Prager followed with his only hit of the game, the game-winner off the fence to score Schwartzer and Butler. Prager is now batting 3-for-6 with the bases loaded and 12-for-39 with runners in scoring position.

In game two, Eastern's walk-off magic did not come in the seventh, but waited til extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth, down 7-6, Eastern's Andre Butler drew a lead off walk to get things started. Butler swiped second base, his team-high seventh stolen base this season, and then was driven home by another hit off the outfield fence by Dave Prager. Prager batted a team-best 3-for-4 in game two and increased his team-high RBI total to 29. With the game tied 7-7, and Prager on second, Kristian Cortizo drew an intentional walk. The move did not pay off for the Aggies as the next batter Devon Ziegenfuss hit the game winner up the middle.

The Eagles play Valley Forge Christian College in a 1:30 pm doubleheader on Wednesday.
