ST. DAVIDS, Pa.- Eastern pitcher Nick Moeltner (4-2)
allowed only four hits and a single run, but Travis Hughes, his
counterpart from DeSales held Eastern without a run to lead the visiting
Bulldogs to a doubleheader and series sweep. Eastern (13-8, 4-5
Freedom) fell 7-4 in the first game.
DeSales grabbed a 4-run lead
with aggressive base-running in the second inning. Justin Scerbo led off
with a bunt single. He made it to third on a hit-and-run play through
the right side. After the next batter took a pitch off the upper arm,
the Bulldogs executed a pair of squeeze plays to plate the first two
runs. The last two runs of the inning scored on an error.
Eastern
starter Brandon Kenish (1-2) settled in and kept the game within reach
from there, but the Eastern offense was unable to convert against
DeSales starter David Drinks until after the Bulldogs grabbed two more
runs in the top of the sixth.
Scott Renauro doubled to start the
sixth, and Greg DeSarro pulled a two-run shot over the left-center field
fence to bring the Eagles back within four at 6-2. DeSales (14-7, 8-1
Freedom) picked up an insurance run in the top of the seventh on an
Ethan Moser homer to center.
The Eagles scored a pair of two-out
runs in the seventh on a Dave Prager double. There were not, however,
enough outs to complete the comeback in the seven inning game.
Game
two featured Moeltner and Hughes and some really sharp fielding plays.
Moeltner, who allowed only four hits and a pair of walks, did not allow a
hit with runners in scoring position and only gave up two fly-ball outs
while striking out six. The Bulldogs picked up the only run they would
need, however, after a seeing-eye single and a pair of walks loaded the
bases with no-one out in the first. Jason Hadinger lined a sacrifice fly
to left for the only RBI of the game.
Moletner escaped the jam with a strike-'em-out throw-'em-out double play.
Eastern
put together its first serious threat in the fifth. Devon Ziegenfuss
hit spinning ground ball through middle for an infield hit. With one
out, Brendon Spall doubled to left center. Ziegenfuss had to freeze
between first and second as Moser dove for the ball. Dillon Schwartzer
then pulled a ball over the bag at third that Scerbo kept in the infield
to keep Ziegenfuss at third.
Hughes got a strike out and then a
nice play behind him on a hard ground ball up the middle by Renauro to
end the inning. The Eagles finished with only five hits in the one hour
and 24 minute second game.
Eastern will now try to get back on the
right track in the league with an important series against Delaware
Valley. They will play the single game at Delaware Valley on Thursday
and will host the Aggies in a doubleheader one week from Monday.
