ST. DAVIDS, Pa.- Gary Moses pitched four innings of one-hit
ball in relief, and the bats came to life late as Eastern University
Baseball scored four times with nobody out in the ninth to complete a
come-from-behind 9-8 win over University of Maine- Presque Isle. Scott
Renauro tied the career hits mark with a 2-for-4 performance.
Eastern
trailed 7-2 going into the bottom of the fourth, and the Eagles, who
scored a pair of runs on bases-loaded walks, had yet to get a hit.Eric
Smith singled to lead off the fourth and scored on Renauro's team-best
fifth sacrifice fly of the year. Eastern left the bases loaded in the
3rd, 4th, and 5th innings.
Greg Lukasik allowed one run in an
inning and two thirds in the the middle part of the game before Moses
came on to start the sixth. Neither Moses nor Lukasik walked a batter as
the Eagles chipped away at the Owl lead.
"It was a great effort
by Gary [Moses] today," Head Coach Matt Midkiff said after the game,
"He had a rough inning last time out, and today was a great bounce-back
effort for him. He and Greg came in and threw strikes and gave us a
chance to win."
The Presque-Isle pitchers struggled to find the
plate throughout the day. Eastern hitters reached base by walk 14 times.
With the bases loaded and one out in the fifth, Dillon Schwartzer
singled through the left side to drive in one, but a strike out and a
Renauro line drive at the third baseman ended that rally.
Renauro
doubled to lead off the eighth. His 149th career hit put him in a tie
with Jordan Nyce for second on the Eastern all-time list. He moved to
third on a long fly ball by Dave Prager. He scored from third on a deep
drive from Greg DeSarro that UMPI centerfielder Stephen Thorne caught
while running into the fence.
After Moses made it through a
perfect ninth, the Eagles loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth on
a pair of walks and a seeing-eye single from Schwartzer through the
left side. André Butler drew a walk to drive in a run and move
Schwartzer, the tying run, into scoring position.
After getting
ahead in the count against UMPI reliever Jake Fillebrown, Renauro
chopped a base hit through the left side to plate a pair of runners.
Renauro's historic knock moved the senior second baseman further forward
in the record books as Eastern's career leader in RBIs.
With
Renauro on first and Butler at third, the Owls elected to pitch to
Prager. The junior first baseman has struck out only once in 74 plate
appearances, and he hacked a 3-1 pitch through the drawn in infield for
the walk-off win.
"It was good for us to battle back, and it is
nice to see Scott reach another milestone." Midkiff said, "He has a been
a big part of program through his four years."
Eastern is back in action in the Freedom Conference at DeSales on Friday.
