ST.DAVIDS, Pa.- With a three RBI day in a 15-5 win over
visiting King's College, Scott Renauro became the first Eastern
University baseball player to reach 100 career RBIs. The senior second
baseman went 4-for-6 and is closing in on school records for hits and
runs scored. Nick Moeltner struck out nine in seven strong innings to
pick up his fourth win against only one loss.
Moeltner (4-1, 2.03
ERA) ran into trouble in the first as the Monarchs scored three runs on
three hits before the junior right-hander retired the last two batters
on swinging strikes. He allowed only two more hits and only three more
hitters to reach safely through the rest of his afternoon.
Eastern
rallied for two runs in the bottom of the inning after a one-out single
from Renauro and a pair of walks loaded the bases for Brandon Kenish.
Two runs scored on an error on the right side of the infield. The walks
turned out to be a huge difference in the game. Eastern hitters drew 10
walks, and the Eastern pitchers only issued a single free pass.
After
neither team tallied in the second. The game broke open in the bottom
of the third. Renauro led off the inning with a two-strike base hit into
short center. The next three Eastern hitters walked to tie the game and
load the bases for the bottom of the order.
After Devon
Ziegenfuss hit into a third-to-home fielders choice, Mark Royer nearly
beat out a ground ball for an RBI fielders choice. Third baseman Brendan
Spall delivered the big blow of the game with a two-out two RBI double
to right-center. After a pitching change, Dillon Schwartzer single
through the left side to drive in Spall. Renauro picked up the final RBI
of the inning with a single to left. Schwartzer beat the throw to the
plate and slide through the catcher for an 8-3 lead.
"Those guys
[Royer,Spall, and Schwartzer]" Midkiff stated, "just don't change their
approach. Coach D [hitting coach Ray D'Orazio] was just telling me
earlier today how well they focus on what they are doing and how they
refuse to try to do more than they should in every at bat. To get 8 RBIs
out of the bottom of the order is huge for us."
Untroubled by
the lengthy delays between pitches, Moeltner continued to deal through
the middle innings, and the Eagles came back to the plate for three more
runs in the bottom of the fourth. Royer delivered the big blow of the
inning with a 2 RBI double. The junior outfielder reached third on an
outfield error and scampered home on a beautifully executed suicide
squeeze play. Royer crossed the plate as Spall's bunt hit the ground.
Renauro
picked up his milestone RBIs with a two-run double down the left field
line in the sixth. Schwartzer picked up the final RBI of the day on an
infield ground out in the seventh.
The Monarchs (5-8, 1-3
Freedom) scored single runs of relievers Greg Lukasik and Lucas
Bremmerman in the eighth and ninth innings, but they were never able to
mount a rally.
"Nick was really good today" Midkiff stated, "He
got in a groove after that first inning. It is a great milestone for
Scotty [Renauro] to get. He came here when we were not very good, and he
has invested a lot into seeing the program grow. I am really happy for
him."
The Eagles (11-5, 3-1 Freedom) will travel to King's tomorrow to
complete the series with a doubleheader. Though the game is scheduled
for 1, impending rains have the schools talking about moving game times
forward to earlier in the day. That announcement will be made via
twitter and both school websites as soon as details are confirmed.
