Rookie Pitching Solid; Baseball Swept at King's

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WILKES-BARRE, Pa.– One day after dropping an 18-13 decision to King's College in the series opener, Eastern University Baseball saw two really solid pitching performances go unrewarded in a pair of shutout losses. Freshmen pitchers Tyler Bennet and Christian Shissler each went the distance as the Eagles dropped the opener,1-0, and the nightcap, 2-0.

Bennett put in what might be the best pitching performance of the year in the opener. The left-handed rookie retired the final 16 King's batters he faced. Only one of the Monarchs' three first-inning hits left the infield. Bennett (1-4) struck out two and did not walk a hitter in his efficient outing.

The Eagles (12-18, 4-12) had five hits against Monarch ace John Wickiser but were unable to convert. The best chance of the game came in the fourth when Liam Clarke doubled to lead off. The Eastern hitters, however, were unable to advance him.

The three hits allowed are the least allowed in a league game by an Eastern pitcher since Brandon Kenish allowed three hits in a 2-1 win at  FDU-Florham in April of 2012.

Shissler allowed six hits and two walks in the 2-0 loss in the nigthcap. He struck out six hitters and allowed only single runs in the third and fourth innings.

Brad Clemens had two of Eastern's four hits.

The losses eliminate the Eagles from post-season contention.

Eastern will conclude the FDU-Florham series with a doubleheader in Madison tomorrow.
