Box Score READING, Pa. - Eastern Women's Tennis picked up its first win of the spring season edging hosts Alvernia 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles picked two of the three doubles matches, and
Emma Paugh claimed the victory in the number one singles match winning in three sets.
Paugh and
Amanda Riiff won the second doubles match by the final of 8-1 while
Leslie Henry and
Hannah Reed captured the third doubles match with an 8-6 victory.
"Third doubles won the best match of the day," said Head Coach
Mark Spangler. "The girls had built up a 7-3 lead but watched that lead shrink to a 7-6 score. In the 14th game of the match, they converted on their third match point to secure the victory 8-6 on a
Hannah Reed volley winner. I am really proud of the way they battled and competed."
In the singles matches, Alvernia claimed victories in three of six matches. Riiff picked up her second win of the day in the No. 3 singles match winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. Henry also picked up a win in her singles match winning in straight sets as well 6-0, 6-4.
With the match tied at 4-4 Paugh needed to win to give the Eagles the victory. After falling in the first set 4-6 Paugh battles back to claim not only the win in the No. 1 singles match but overall match. Paugh won the second and third set by scores of 6-3, 6-3.
"Emma played great in the 3rd set with all of the pressure on her shoulders," concluded Spangler. "Her play was impressive from the baseline. She hit a lot of winners on her forehand side and also played great defense with her court coverage and anticipation."
Eastern hosts Penn State-Abington on March 29th.
