CENTER VALLEY, Pa.--Eastern University Baseball dropped both games of Monday's conference doubleheader at DeSales University.
The DeSales Bulldogs shut the Eagles out 4-0 in the first game and then held on to a 5-4 win in game two.
Eastern senior Eric Rossi pulled the Eagles within one run in game two with his first home run of the season.
DeSales hung all four of its game-one runs in the fifth inning against Eagles' starter Ryan Kehr. The Bulldogs pounded five of their 10 hits in the inning. The remaining five hits were all doubles in different innings, causing no damage, because no one was on base in any of those situations. Kehr did not allow any walks in the complete game performance.
Bulldogs' starter Andrew Schuler allowed five hits and two walks in the win while striking out six Eagles.
Three of Eastern's hits came from Ryan McMenamin who batted 3-for-3 for the second game in-a-row. Angelo Kelly and Tommy Strazza had the other Eastern hits. The Eagles had a runner make it into scoring position in three innings, but couldn't bring anyone home.
In game two, Eastern's scoring drought continued through the first inning. After DeSales scored three runs in the bottom of the first, Eastern responded with two runs in the top of the second to snap a 17-inning scoring drought. Strazza doubled with one one, was moved to third by Pete Crawford single and then scored on an infield error on a ball hit by Andrew Check. Cal Sanelli later singled to right to score Crawford.
DeSales, however, matched the Eagles with two runs in the bottom of the inning--on a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch.
Eastern pushed for a comeback in the top of the six. After Joe Grato singled, Rossi brought him home with a two-run blast to center field. With the bases now empty, the next six Eagles were retired in order to end the game.
Eastern (5-12, 2-5 Freedom) is scheduled to host Wilkes at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. With rain in the forecast for tomorrow afternoon, a decision will be made in the morning about the status of the game.
