SWARTHMORE, Pa.--Eastern University Baseball caught up to the Swarthmore College Garnet in the top of the eighth inning of Wednesday afternoon's game. Swarthmore, however, pulled away in the bottom of the inning to take the game 9-7.
The Eagles' bats got to Swarthmore starter Henry Cappel early, scoring three runs off him in the top of the first and then chasing him from the game with two more runs in the third. Nathan Booth came in in relief and pitched five innings, striking out seven en route to the win. Eastern's Bryan Sztukowski went 4.1 innings in the start, striking out three and allowing four runs, one earned. Justin Fredericks, who pitched the eighth inning, took the loss for the Eagles.
Eastern tallied 10 hits while allowing 14. Freshmen Timmy Gorton and Cal Sanelli had multiple hits for the Eagles. Gorton went 2-for-5 (both doubles) with two runs scored and one batted in; Sanelli went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. The first eight batters in Eastern's lineup recorded a hit.
Swarthmore cleanup hitter Scoop Ruxin had a great day at the dish going 3-for-5 with five RBIs.
Eastern loaded the bases in the first inning with singles by Kelly and McMenamin followed later by an Eric Rossi walk. Sanelli cleared the bases with a two-RBI single (Rossi scored on an error on the play).
Swarthmore posted two runs in the bottom of the inning, but Eastern added two of its own in the third. Gorton led off the inning with a double and later scored when Andrew Check took a bases-loaded walk. Two batters later Alex Doelp walked to force Joe Grato home.
Two runs from Swarthmore in the fifth made it a 5-4 game and Swarthmore finally took the lead with three runs in the seventh.
Now trailing by two, Eastern evened the score with an RBI-double by Gorton and then an RBI-single by Rossi to score Gorton.
Swarthmore stole the lead back in the bottom of the inning with two runs on three hits. Eastern had the tying runs in scoring position in their last at bat but unfortunately left them stranded.
Eastern (2-8) is scheduled to play its first home game on Saturday, a conference doubleheader against FDU-Florham.
