Cole Scores Four; Women's Soccer Tops Aggies

Box Score DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – Lightning in the vicinity forced officials to delay the start of Eastern University Women's Soccer's game at Delaware Valley University by a half hour. Once the game started, Emily Cole struck four times to lead the Eagles to an important 5-1 win. Cole is only the second player in program history to score four times in a match.

Cole opened the scoring from close range in the 11th minute. Hannah Bomberger, her roommate, set up the play with a good run up the right side and a slotted ball to the back post. Cole beat her mark to the ball and slid it in for her 12th tally of the season.

"That first goal was huge," head coach Dan Mouw said after the game. "Delaware Valley is a really challenging team to unlock. We felt if we could get a lead that they would have to chase the game a little and that we would be able to find more opportunities."

Following the goal, the game opened up. While the Eagles had more chances, the Aggies looked dangerous in transition. Adrianna Swinehart made a pair of saves to preserve the 1-0 lead, but hosts found their equalizer in the 39th minute when Nikki Dunlap took a pass from Mary Carpenter and finished a breakaway. The play started innocently enough, with a Delaware Valley free kick deep in their own end. Mouw expressed disappointment with his team's execution in defending that play.

The Eagles responded. Less than a minute later, Amber Stirling won a ball deep in the Aggie end and pushed a ball the ball into a little bit of empty space. Cole took a touch to get the edge of the box and then uncorked a right-footed blast into the upper corner. Stirling had been at the scorer's table waiting to get in the game when Delaware Valley had tied the game.

"That was a great response by the whole team," Mouw stated. "I was really pleased with Amber's effort on that play. She came into the game at a tough time and did exactly what we wanted her to do. She gave us a spark. The difference between being up 2-1 at half and being tied is enormous."

The Eagles (6-7-1, 2-1 MAC Freedom) held an 11-6 edge in shots through the first 45 minutes.

Only moments into the second half, Cole completed her hat trick. Hanna Kontanis started the action of the play in the middle of the midfield. She rolled a ball wide to Lydia Peachey, and Peachey slipped an angled ball in behind the Aggie back line. Peachey is also Cole's roommate.

"We talked at halftime about trying to find width again in the game." Mouw added, "We had fallen into the trap of trying to go vertical on every ball. We found the width, and that goal came as a result."

Moments later, Kontanis found the net for her third tally of the year. Katy Laurie slipped a ball into space, and Kontanis, her roommate, powered it in from close range for a 4-1 lead.

Even up 4-1 with 40 minutes to play, the game did not feel safe. The Aggies opened up the game and began to put pressure on the Eastern goal. Over the next 20 minutes, Swinehart had to make a pair of excellent saves and manage her box well as the home team threw everything forward. The Aggies also hit the crossbar twice.

Cole finished the scoring at the 75 minute mark. Once again, it was an opportunity from width. The Eastern back row swung the ball wide to Courtney Davis on the right side. Davis slotted a long angled ball into Cole's path. The junior forward slipped a ball around the charging goalkeeper for her 15th tally of the year. Davis leads the Eagles with six assists for the season.

Adrianna Swinehart recorded six saves in the the first 80 minutes to earn her fifth win of the season. Leah Lozzi made one stop in her ten minutes of action.

"I am really pleased with the effort of the group tonight," Mouw concluded. "That lightning delay can really be a weird thing. We warmed up and were all ready for line ups, and then we had to sit around for 40 minutes. I thought the team responded well. Emily's effort tonight was pretty special, but it was made possible by some really good work in our back row and midfield. I thought Hana [Kontanis] played her best game to date, and our backs made really good decisions. We want to build on this effort."

Eastern will host DeSales University on Saturday at 11 AM.
