ST. DAVIDS, Pa.- Big innings hurt Eastern University Baseball
in a 21-11 home loss to DeSales. The visiting Bulldogs (10-5, 5-0) put
up six runs in fifth and another six in the eighth to pull away. Brendan
Spall led the Eastern offense with three hits.
The Eagles struggled to get to Bulldog starter Colby Pacillo in the
early going, and DeSales built a 4-0 lead off Eastern starter Ben
Melendez. The Eagles struck for a single run on an Eric Rossi sacrifice
fly in the third inning, but the inning ended with three Eastern
base-runners aboard.
DeSales scored twice in the top of the fourth before the Eagles answered
with another single tally in the bottom of the inning. Spall pulled a
hard single to left to plate Andrew DiFerdinando. The Eagles had runners
at second and third with one out, but could not close the gap further.
The DeSales' fifth started innocently enough. Melendez retired the first
two hitters on three pitches. The Bulldogs then worked deep counts and
picked up four key hits to score six runs and break the game open.
DeSales led 14-2 at the seventh inning stretch, but the Eagles responded
with a big inning of their own to close the gap to 14-9. The rally
started with one out. After Rossi singled, Greg DeSarro reached on a
fielder's choice. The Eagles scored on a walk, a hit batsman, and a
couple errors to bring the game back to within reach.
The momentum shifted back to the visitors in with a six-run eighth.
The Eagles used six pitchers in the loss. DeSales shortstop Jack Kavetski scored four times and knocked in four runs on four hits to lead the guests.
The two teams resume the series at DeSales on Monday.
