Baseball Wins Snow-Shortened Game

Box Score

PURCHASE, N.Y.-- After a 2 1/2 hour bus ride to New York, the Eagles played just six official innings of the first half of the conference doubleheader and came home with a 4-1 win over the Manhattanville Valiants.

Eastern posted six runs in a sloppy top of the seventh. As snow continued to accumulate, the umpires called the game as official through six innings.

Eagles' pitcher Ernie Stiegler hurled six solid innings, allowing four hits and walking two while striking out six batters. Stiegler is now 2-1 this season with a 3.07 ERA. Opposing hitters are batting .182 off him. Coach Jed Morris commented that Stiegler got into a groove in the later innings and was in command of his cutter, getting the Manhattanville batters to swing over those pitches.

Freshman leadoff batter Angelo Kelly returned to the lineup Saturday with a 3-for-3 day at the plate and two RBIs. Kelly is batting .394 this season. Eric Rossi, who made the move to right field Saturday, also had a statistically-perfect batting day, going 2-for-2 with an RBI.

After Manhattanville picked up an unearned run in the first, Rossi put Eastern on the scoreboard in the second with an RBI single to right field that scored Tyler Orr from third. Rossi then stole second and then advanced to third on a groundout. Kelly later scored Rossi and Brendan Spall with a single to left, giving Eastern the 2-1 lead.

Stiegler worked out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the fourth, getting Hans Arias to foul out to first and then striking out Kurt Hommen looking on a full count.

The Eagles scored their fourth run in the fifth inning after Angelo Kelly beat out an infield single. Brandon Kenish scored on the errant throw to first.

The second game of the doubleheader has yet to be rescheduled. The Eagles are scheduled to play at Cairn University on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
