ST. DAVIDS, Pa.--Eastern Baseball dropped its home opener on Friday afternoon, falling 4-3 to the Manhattanville College Valiants.
Eagles' first baseman Tyler Orr launched his second home run of the season to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh, but Manhattanville took the lead for good in the top of the eighth with a fielder's choice that scored a runner from third.
The Eagles were held to six hits in the low-scoring affair. All six hits came from Eastern's five through eight batters in the lineup. Tyler Orr and Eric Rossi each batted 2-for-4.
Eagles' Lucas Bremerman tossed six innings to start the game, but received a no decision. He struck out two batters looking and induced 12 ground outs.
The Valiants' Alex Basso earned the win, pitching seven innings, allowing five hits while striking out five.
The Eagles put two runners on base in the second after Orr wore a pitch and after Eric Rossi executed a bunt single. Two batters later Mark Royer cracked a ball off the fence in right center for a two-RBI double, giving Eastern the 2-0 lead.
Bremerman held the Valiants scoreless through five innings. In the sixth, Valiants' DH Bobby Guerra batted in a runner with a triple off the outfield fence. The next batter, Nick Euvino, plated Guerra with a single to center, tying the game at 2-2.
Manhattanville took the lead 3-2 in the seventh. Orr tied the game with a solo shot over the 355-foot mark in center. Rossi followed with a double. Devon Ziegenfuss followed with a ball that carried with the wind deep to left, but was caught at the fence.
After the Valiants regained the lead in the eighth, the Eagles put runners in scoring position in the bottom of the eighth and the ninth but were unable to bring them home.
The Eagles are scheduled to continue the conference series at Manhattanville Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
