DOYLESTOWN,Pa.- It was one of those days. Things were set up for
Eastern Baseball to succeed at Delaware Valley in a rare Thursday league
game. Eastern had Nick Moeltner throwing against a winless Jim
Calabrese. Moeltner ran into trouble early, and Calabrese handcuffed
Eastern hitters for eight innings in a 15-3 whitewashing.
Everything
that could have gone wrong, did. After the Eagles went quietly in the
first, the first three Aggie hitters hit safely. Moeltner looked like he
might be able to get out of the inning with only one run in after he
struck out a hitter and got a short fly ball to left, but Del Val's Mike
Ferrier hit a 1-2 pitch to right field for a 2 RBI double.
The
Eastern (13-10, 4-6 Freedom) offense did not find its rhythm and the Aggies (10-12, 3-7 Freedom) hit the ball and
took advantage of some spotty defense in the third to send Moeltner to
an early exit. The junior had only given up 12 runs prior to today. Only
five of the nine runs he gave up were earned.
The only offensive
highlight of the day came in a three-run sixth after the game was
already out of hand. Mark Royer recorded Eastern's only extra-base hit
with an RBI triple.
The Eagles will try to get back on track when they host the Aggies for a doubleheader with games starting at 1:30.
