After Jonny Shenk won his third singles match in
a super-tiebreaker, Tyler Hoagland battled to an impressive third set
win to lift the Eagles (7-7) to a non-league win over Arcadia.
"It
was a big win for Tyler," Head Coach Mark Spangler stated, "and a big
win for our guys. He and Jonny were out there with the pressure on them,
and they came through."
The match reached the decision point
after the Eagles won two of three doubles matches but lost three of the
first four singles matches to be completed. Hoagland and Shenk combined
to take the top doubles match with a tightly-contested 8-3 match.
Spangler pointed to Shenk's service game in doubles as a highlight of
the afternoon.
Tyler Schultz and Mylon Weaver teamed up to take
their 2nd doubles match 8-3 as well. Weaver cruised to an efficient 6-4,
6-1 win at the fifth singles spot, but the Eagles fell short at the
2nd, 4th, and 6th spots in the order.
Hoagland's match was the
first of the two to go to a third set, so he and Arcadia's Chris Finney
played a full third set. Shenk and his opponent, Jeremy Garcia, battled
through a second set tie-breaker, so daylight became a consideration and
a super-tiebreaker was in order. Shenk continued his strong service
game and served an ace to take the match with a 10-8.
With the
match tied, all eyes turned to court one where Hoagland led 4-3. The
point of the match, according to Spangler, came with Hoagland leading
5-4 and up 30-15. Hoagland, on the baseline, tried three times to pass
Finny at the net. Each time, Finny was able to reach the ball and put
pressure on the Eastern senior. It appeared that Finny had hit a winner,
but at the last second Hoagland was able to lunge for the ball in the
corner and block a winner up the line to earn a pair of match points.
Finny fought off the first one, but Hoagland kept the pressure on and
prevailed.
The Eagles will finish their season at Misericordia this Saturday.
