Baseball Races Past Immaculata

Box Score

IMMACULATA,Pa.- Eastern University Baseball used a pair of big innings early to jump to a 13-2 lead and never looked back en route to an 18-10 win at Immaculata. Gary Moses went his scheduled four innings to pick up his second win of the year for the Eagles.

After each team scored single tallies in the first inning, Eastern put a five-spot on the board in the third to open up the game. Eric Smith, Brendon Spall, and Dillon Schwartzer each singled to load the bases. After Scott Renauro walked in a run with one out, and Dave Preager hit a 400 foot sacrifice fly to straightaway center, Greg DeSarro singled to drive in a run and Devon Ziegenfuss tripled to the fence in right-center to drive in a pair. Ziegenfuss finished the day with three hits and a team-high three RBIs. His first hit of the day was an RBI double in the first.

Moses allowed a single run in the second and escaped a little bit of a jam when Ziegenfuss made a running catch on a sinking line drive with one out and runners on the corners. Moses allowed three runs on seven hits in four innings.

Eastern put the game away in the fourth. Prager doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a ball that skipped away from the catcher. Greg DeSarro then hit a ground ball single through a drawn in infield to start a seven run inning.

"The heads up base-running by [Dave] Prager changed the game," Head Coach Matt Midkiff commented, "He gets to third on a ball that doesn't get that far from the catcher and now we get a big inning."

André Butler recorded an RBI triple for the big hit of the seven hit inning.

Greg Lukasik came on in relief and allowed one run on one hit in two innings of work. Ryan Chenault, Matt Martin, and Ben Melendez finished out the game on the mound. The Eagles (19-12) will now prepare for a huge Freedom Conference series this weekend agaisnt Manhattanville College. Eastern will play the first game in Purchase and the Saturday doubleheader at home. Eastern has a one-game lead on the Valiants with six games to play.
