Baseball Pummels Valley Forge for Doubleheader Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.--Eastern Baseball defeated Valley Forge Christian College in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday, 3-1 in game one and 21-4 in game two.

Eastern improved to 17-10 with the two wins.

Eastern's Lucas Bremerman pitched two scoreless, hitless innings in game one to earn the win. In game two, Austin Little earned his first win, allowing two hits in two innings pitched. Over the course of the doubleheader, Eastern's relief pitchers (Bremerman, Greg Lukasik, Drew Shaw, Matt Rhyne, and Ryan Chanault) allowed just two hits over nine innings of work.

Eastern's Matt Martin made his first start of the season, throwing three innings, striking out two and allowing two hits.

In game one, Eastern's Andrew DiFerdinando carried the offense with a 2-for-3 day and 2 RBIs. Mark Royer earned Eastern's other RBI in game one, sending DiFerdinando home from third with a single to right field.

In game two, the Eagles opened the scoring floodgates, tallying five in the first, eight in the second, three in the fourth and five in fifth. When Valley Forge pitcher Roger Wilcox was pulled in the second inning, pitcher Jake Moritz returned the mound after pitching six innings in game one. Moritz pitched the rest of game two for a total of 11 innings pitched and 64 batters faced.

Six players batted for a multi-RBI game in the second part of the doubleheader. Catcher Jonathan Washatka, in just his eighth game played this season, knocked in two RBIs with a triple, Brendan Spall also hit a triple and two RBIs, Kristian Cortizo slapped three hits and three RBIs, Dillon Schwartzer knocked three hits and two RBIs, Devon Zigenfuss added two RBIs, and Jake Tretina belted a bases-loaded triple for three RBIs.

Coach Matt Midkiff wanted his players to work on getting on top of the ball and driving it in game two, after making 10 fly-ball outs in 25 at bats in game one. The Eagles earned an extra 11 at-bats in game two, and hit one less fly-ball out, a sign that they were in fact doing a better job of driving the ball and not committing lazy at-bats.

Eastern returns to league play with a 3:30 pm home game against FDU-Florham on Friday.

Notes:

All of Eastern's position players saw playing time on Wednesday.

Coach Matt Midkiff earned his 50th and 51st career wins.
