Baseball Streak Snapped at Five

Box Score

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.- Eastern University Baseball had its winning streak snapped at five with a 9-4 loss to Catholic in its spring break finale. The Eagles (6-3) finished their time in Myrtle Beach with a 4-1 record.

After finishing off Penn State Berks late Thursday evening,  Coach Midkiff's squad had a quick turnaround for Friday's 9:00 am start against Catholic (9-3). The short night did not seem to effect the offense early, as Andre Butler and Scott Renauro scored an Greg DeSarro's one out single down the left field line.

The Cardinals, however, rallied with a pair of unearned runs off Eastern starter Nick Moeltner in the bottom of the inning.

The Eagles grabbed the lead back in the third without the benefit of a hit. Scott Renauro took a fastball in the back and advanced around the infield on successive wild pitches before scoring on an error.

"It is the end of the long week," Midkiff explained, "and both teams missed some plays that they will typically make."

Catholic grabbed the lead for good off Moeltner in the bottom of the fourth. Catholic first baseman Colin McCarthy started the rally with a wind-aided double to right center. He scampered home after successive wild pitches. The next Cardinal hitter laced a double down the left field line and scored on an infield error. Moeltner, who was on a pitch count, got out of the fourth with a ground ball out. He struck out five and allowed three hits and a single earned run.

Catholic scored two more runs in support of starter Kevin Farley (1-1) in the fifth. The Eagles manufactured a single run in the sixth when Tyler Orr stole third and home, but the rally ended there.

"It was a good week for us," Midkiff concluded, "we got to see guys in different situations. We are looking forward to getting back north and getting into the Freedom Conference schedule."
