Box Score ST. DAVIDS, Pa.- Eastern University Baseball honored four seniors prior to the start of this afternoon's home finale against DeSales University. The visiting Bulldogs (17-14, 12-5) jumped to an early lead and roughed up the Eastern bullpen to win the series opener 17-1.
The group of four, Joel Rios, Dan Garcia, Mike McNulty, and Jesse Taylor were part of a tremendous turnaround in 2010. Theough the 2011 season has not gone as anyone planned, they have been leaders on this year's team. Through the season, the Eagles have dropped several close games and have had to contend with a very irregular schedule due to the weather. Each player will be missed as the program moves forward.
DeSales scored a single tally in the first on a two out triple and an opposite field single from Doc Neiman. The visitors put four more on the board against Eastern starter Nick Moeltner on a pair of home runs in the second. The usually steady starter gave up the first homer to left fielder after a dropped foul ball. Four batters later Brian Mauro hit two-out shot to right to give DeSales starter David Drinks all the insurance he would need. Moeltner faced only one hitter in the third before giving way to the bullpen. Drinks allowed only a single third inning tally as he scattered six hits over eight solid innings.
The Eastern relieving corps threw strikes, but DeSales hit three more homers, including a sixth inning grand slam by catcher Derek Chrismer. The two teams start with zeroes on the board for the final two games of the series ttomorrow at DeSales. Eastern will then finish the year with a doubleheader at Delaware Valley College on Sunday.
