Baseball Tops Delaware Valley

Box Score

ST.DAVIDS, Pa- In a game that will never show up on a museum wall, Eastern University Baseball took a 10-2 home win over Delaware Valley College in their series opener. Nick Moeltner did not allow an earned run through seven innings to win his third straight start.

The visiting Aggies took the lead on an Eastern error in the top of the first. The Eastern defense, which has been steady for much of the year, committed five errors on the afternoon. The Eagles rallied in the bottom of the inning with a two-out three run homer by Greg DeSarro. The Eastern DH knocked in André Butler, who had singled, and Dan Garcia, who had walked, with a blast to straight-away center field.

Delaware Valley rapped a pair of two-out hits and cut the lead in half on another throwing error.  DeSarro doubled to lead off the bottom of the fourth, and the Eagles took the run back when he scored on an error.

Eastern broke the game open with five runs on three hits in the sixth. Butler and Garcia knocked in runs in the inning. Moeltner finished the seventh before giving way to Kristian Cortizo in the eighth and Matt Martin for the ninth.

"Nick did not have his best stuff today," Head Coach Matt Midkiff remarked, "but there we were. In the seventh inning without an earned run. He had to throw a lot more pitches today, but he was able to work through it." Moeltner (4-3) has only given up one earned run in his last three starts.

Butler and Garcia each finished with three hits at the top of the order for the Eagles. Garcia, who finished 3-4 and was on base four times, hit with a wood bat for the first time.

"Coach D [assistant coach Ray 'Orazio] suggested it might help him slow himself down," Midkiff said, "and it worked. Danny has a great swing, but he has been struggling a little, so the change might be just the thing."

The Eagles added another run in the bottom of the eighth on a Luke Huber sacrifice fly.

The two teams were scheduled to complete the series tomorrow, but the games in Doylestown have already been pushed to Sunday at 1:00.
