However, mother nature would change that, when the skies opened up for thirty minutes in the middle of the match, drenching Eastern's courts. Eastern was able to claw their way to a 5-4 victory for their fourth straight overall win and third straight conference win of the season.
The Eagles, who have been dominant as of late in doubles play struggled on Friday afternoon. Bryan Arnett and Dan Wilson were able to keep Eastern in striking distance of the overall match win by defeating their second doubles opponents 8-4.
King's took a 2-1 lead into singles play. Two singles matches were complete before the rains pushed play inside. Josh Hall picked up a win at fifth singles 6-3, 6-2, but Dan Wilson fell to his third singles opponent 6-2, 6-4.
Play resumed an hour later at Radnor Vally Tennis Club in Villanova, Pa. King's was clinging to a 3-2 point lead with hopes of taking victories in first, second, and sixth singles. However, Eastern rallied back to take two of the three matches for a 4-4 deadlock with one match remaining.
Bryan Arnett picked up another singles victory. Despite dropping a tight second set 5-7, Arnett continued to push through. The sophomore remained steady, and committed few unforced errors to pull out the third set win 6-2.
Arnett's win knotted the score at three wins a piece. Jonny Shenk dropped a tough first set 6-7 at sixth singles. The freshman faltered early on in the second set, losing five straight games. Shenk would not be denied however, and rallied back to win seven straight games to win the second set 7-5. The Goshen, Ind. native pulled out the super tie breaker win 10-6 to take the match and gave the Eagles a 4-3 advantage in the match.
Jordan Gates was unable to convert in his first singles match, falling 6-3, 6-2. Tyler Hoagland picked up a first set win 6-2 and rallied back in the second set to win 7-5, ultimately giving Eastern a 5-4 victory over King's.
"This was definitely an interesting match," recalled head coach Mark Spangler after six and a half hours of tennis. "This was a long day, but in the end we're one step closer to a playoff berth."
"Our guys hung in there to win some big points and fought their way back into matches," praised Spangler. "Jonny (Shenk) played his best tennis of the year and it was a huge confidence builder for all of our guys to be able to rally back like they did."
With the win, Eastern moves to 3-1 in Freedom Conference play. The Eagles have two conference matches remaining. On Wednesday, April 21, Coach Spangler's squad travles to Wilkes University before closing out their season at home on Saturday, April 24 against Misericordia University. Both matches are crucial for Eastern's run into the Freedom Conference playoffs.
