CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa—
Malik Asfour finished his season with a dominating win in the fifth-place match at the NCAA Division III Men's Wrestling Championships. Asfour becomes Eastern Wrestling's first male All-American.
After claiming a pair of wins yesterday, Asfour found himself pitted against North Central's Christian Guzman, the top seed in the tournament, in the semifinals at 125 pounds. After Asfour fell behind early and could not catch up., he was sent to the consolation bracket where he matched up against Alex Diaz from NYU, the third seed in the tournament, whom he wrestled against in the Regional Tournament.
Asfour dropped that match but rallied to earn a win by major decision over Nico Rivera. The two wrestled last night in the quarterfinals. This time, Asfour kept his fast start going and earned a 13-1 win.
Eastern Wrestling was initially expected to start competing next year. With Coach
Andrew Taylor recruiting quality wrestlers in this year, the Eagles garnered All-America Honors in both Women's and Men's Wrestling. Eastern will host its first home meets next year.
