EWING, N.J. — Led by
Malik Asfour and
Ryan Mansueto in the semifinals, Eastern University Men's Wrestling has four men still active at the Region 3 Championships hosted by TCNJ.
Asfour, the second seed at 125, dominated his two match-ups. He earned bonus points with a 16-0 technical fall in his opener and secured full points with a pin in the second round. He will take on Matt Griffin of the host Lions in his next match. Asfour earned an 8-3 win when those two met in December.
Mansueto also advanced at 141, but the junior needed to go the distance in each of his wins. He secured a 7-2 win over Jacob Torres from King's and a win by the same score over Messiah's Jacob Cunningham. he will see Albright's Daniel Metzler in his next match. When those two met in early January, Mansueto earned a pin. With the top three finishers from each weight class earning a trip to Nationals, a win in the semifinals would lock up a spot.
After dropping his opener at 165,
Nicholas DeLorenzo has won twice to reach the placement round of the consolation bracket. He will need to win three matches to get a qualifying spot. He picked up a 14-12 win by decision and then rallied to post a win by fall in the third despite trailing 8-1 in the match to stay alive.
Jackson Orrell, wrestling up a weight at 133, dropped his opener to the 2nd seed before claiming a pair of bonus-point wins in the consolation bracket to secure a place. A fifteen seed coming in, Orrell beat the 10-seed with a pin and claimed a major decision win over the fifth seed. Like DeLorenzo, Orrell will need to win three-straight to make nationals, but he has secured placement in his first NCAA Regional.
Eastern Men's Wrestling was slated to start competition next year, but the Eagles have battled throughout and are currently 12th in the 21-team region.
