FROSTBURG, Md.— Eastern University Women's Wrestling used some early bonus-point wins and a pair of clutch decisions late to earn a 24-22 road win over the Frostburg State University Bobcats.
Maya Krieger broke a late tie with a 9-4 decision in the final match of the evening.
With only seven wrestlers dressing for the match, the Eagles started the match needing to recoup 15 points from those forfeits.
Jesenia Camargo took a five-point bite out of that deficit with a pin at 103. After the Eagles forfeited at 110,
Josey Wehr picked up a hard-fought single point in a loss to a very strong opponent at 117. Morgan Layman picked up her 25th win of the year in the match.
Though she wrestled into the second round,
Savannah Witt grabbed four points without allowing one on an 11-0 technical fall decision at 124. The Eagles led 10-9 on the scoreboard for only as long as it took the referee to raise the hand of the Frostburg wrestler at 133.
Wrestling back near her home,
Paige Jackson earned a tough 10-4 decision to pull the Eagles to within two points with four bouts remaining.
Zoey Haines earned all five points with her 15th pin of the year, but the match, with Eastern going to forfeit at 180, was going to come down to the final two tests.
When
Olivia Kinder earned an 8-4 decision at 160, the Eagles led 21-16. The forfeit at 180 put the dual result in Krieger's hands. Wrestling at 207 for the first time, Krieger gave up the first two points of the match but tied the score at two with a take-down near the border. She pushed her opponent out to go up for good by a a 3-2 score. The lead stood at 5-4 at the break. Krieger dominated the second round but did not stretch her lead until the final 50 seconds.
