Women's Wrestling Blanks Bridgeport to Earn Split

FAIRFIELD, Conn.— Eastern University Women's Wrestling continued its historic opening season with another milestone as they secured the program's first ever shutout win with a 38-0 win over the University of Bridgeport in the second of two duals hosted by Sacred Heart University. The Eagles fell to the hosts in the opening match.

With wrestlers in only eight weight classes, the Eagles needed a bit of fortune to earn their first shutout, but as Bridgeport also did not have wrestlers at 131 or 207, those matches went uncontested rather than turning into forfeits.

Because any wrestler scoring a point in a match that is decided by technical fall or decision still earns a point, shutouts can be difficult to get. The Eagles started the match up 20 points when Bridgeport did not fill the first four weight classes. Paige Jackson earned a shutout win by technical fall at 138. The shutout was in jeopardy at 145 when Zoey Haines gave up two points early in her match. The first year standout rallied and earned the win by pin to secure five points for her squad.

After Olivia Kinder ground out a 10-0 win by technical fall at 160, The shutout rested on the result of the match at 180. Maya Krieger was down points early and in a bad way for several excruciating seconds. She somehow worked her arm free and got back to neutral. From there, she went on the attack. After scoring several take-downs to level the match, Krieger ended it with a pin to secure the full five points.

The Eagles fell 38-8 to an experienced group from Sacred Heart in the first match. Savannah Witt continued her dominating first year with a win by technical fall at 124. Haines was the only other Eagle to win a match. She earned a 12-2 technical fall victroy at 145.

Jesenia Camargo lost in a very tight 4-0 decision at 103.

The Eagles will wrestle at Frostburg Sate next Sunday.
