Women's Track and Field Opens Indoor Season at Diplomat Open

LANCASTER, Pa. - Eastern Women's Track and Field opened its 2024 indoor season on Friday at the Diplomat Open hosted by Franklin & Marshall. Hailey Shreffler began her senior season with a school record finish in the 5000 Meter Run, five other Eagles recorded top-eight finishes, and the 4x400 relay team placed second to wrap up the day.

Shreffler, fresh off a brilliant cross country season, won the 5000 Meter Run with a time of 18:13.89. It was her best-ever finish in the event, crushing her previous time by 44 seconds, and set a new school record in the process.

First-year Am'yra Johnson put together a strong debut, placing fourth in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 10.08, while sophomore Anahrie Anderson began her sophomore campaign with a third place finish in the 400 Meter Dash with a time of 1:03.35. First-year Tiana Miller placed right after Anderson with a time of 1:04.10, while Johnson also placed fourth in the 200 Meter Dash with a time of 28.39.  In her track and field debut, fellow first-year Gisella Croge placed seventh in the Mile with a time of 5:55.06.

In the field events, sophomore Savana Dodd built off her strong freshman season with a third place finish in the weight throw. Dodd finished with a throw of 13.67 m. Dodd also placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 11.12 meters.

In the final event of the day, the Eastern 4x400 relay team of Miller, Croge, Anderson, and Mya Cadena placed second with a time of 4:25.84.

"Today was a good indication of how our fall training went. Our freshmen got their first taste of college competition and our upperclassmen got to see how much they improved from last year's first indoor meet," Eastern Head Coach Will Mills said. "The day was filled with energy, camaderie, and positive vibes. Overall, I am happy with everyone's performance on the day. This was a great beginning to the season and I look forward to next week's competition."

Eastern will be back in action next weekend at the River Hawk Early Season Multi and Invitational.
