How It Happened:
Eastern hit .370 in the opening set against Washington College to win 25-15 and grab control of the match early. Eastern's offensive efficiency decreased in the second set, but the Eagles still kept the pressure on the Shorewomen and pulled away a 25-22 win. Eastern had 16 kills in the third set toclaim the match with a 25-17 win.
The Eagles struggled to find an offensive rhythm in the opening set against Wheaton early and hit only .065 while dropping the set by a 25-20 score.
In the second set, the Eagles were able to get their middles going and hit .361 as a team with 17 kills on the way to a 25-21 win. Eastern ground out a 25-22 win in the all-important third set before putting down 18 kills in an impressive 25-19 win in the fourth.
Roberts hd 16 kills against Wheaton on a career-high 33 attacks. Her previous high in attacks (28) came in Eastern's five-set match in the National Quarterfinals against the University of Northwestern in 2016.
Four Eastern players, Roberts, Paulsen, Shelby, and
Ally Spillane all had double-figure kills against Wheaton.
Coach Birtwistle says:
"Sarah created havoc for opposing middles and defenses all weekend and Caroline is settling down into her six-rotation responsibilities. She had her strongest match of the year today vs. Washington. She hit .474 with 16 kills and passed an impressive 2.2. As a group we passed very well against Washington, and that made a big difference. We were able to keep the pressure on them because we passed so well."
"I am really pleased to see Michelle have another dominant weekend after her MVP effort last weekend."
"Cecilia lead our defense with 71 digs this weekend. She was one dig shy of double-digit digs in all four matches, and 28 in a four set match is really good.
Katie Stenby also had double-digit digs in three out of four matches. Overall another excellent team effort. While some individuals stood out, the combined effort of all our players is our biggest strength. Throughout the weekend, we did a nice job of pressuring our opponents and executing quality serves and attacks."
