Box Score ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– A short-handed Eastern University Women's Tennis squad battled to a 5-4 win over the visiting Misericordia University Cougars to claim the third seed in the upcoming MAC Freedom Tournament.
Lauren Good was the last Eastern player on the court with the score tied at 4-4. The first year won the final two sets at second singles to secure the match.
With two players out for family reasons, Head Coach
Mark Spangler had to scramble his doubles teams. The new groupings turned out as the Eagles won two doubles points. To keep
Shannon Jugler and Good together, Spangler put
Olivia Weaver with
Emma Paugh at the top doubles-spot. While both players are primarily baseline players, the two hit enough quality shots at the net to earn an 8-4 win over the top Misericordia pair. Jugler and Good continued their run of strong play in the league with an 8-5 win at second doubles.
Paugh dropped her first set a the top singles spot before wearing down her opponent on the hot afternoon. Paugh claimed her second win of the day 2-6, 6-0, 6-2. Weaver won her match at third singles, 6-3, 6-2. The Cougars, who are the fourth seed in the upcoming MAC Freedom Tournament, picked up wins at the fourth, fifth, and sixth singles spots to set up Good's heroics.
Good had dropped her first set 7-6 with a 7-5 tiebreaker, but she came back to claim the second set 6-4 and earned a 6-3 win in the deciding set.
"That was a tough win for us today," Spangler said. "Winning first doubles was huge for us, and I was really pleased with Lauren's mindset in bouncing back. We are looking forward to going back to DeSales."
The Eagles (7-5, 4-2 MAC Freedom) will play DeSales in Center Valley on Wednesday. The winner of that match will play the winner of Wilkes and Misericordia. Top-seeded WIlkes has won ten-consecutive MAC Freedom Championships.
