Box Score ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Men's Tennis outlasted the visiting Misericordia University Cougars to claim a hard-fought 5-4 win in the final match of the year for both teams.
Ryan Torresin and
Karl Finkbeiner were double-winners at the top of the order for the Eagles.
Finkbeiner and Torresin cruised to an 8-3 win at first doubles, but the Eagles trailed 2-1 when singles play started. Torresin overwhelmed his opponent at the top singles spot and did not drop a game to tie the match at 2-2.
James Blizzard gave the Eagles a critical point at sixth singles. Blizzard, who did not play doubles, ran his already tired opponent around the court for a 6-2, 6-3 win and a 3-2 lead.
The Cougars answered with a point at fifth singles before
Connor Mooney earned a 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 win at third singles to put the Eagles within a point of claiming their second MAC Freedom win of the year. Anotonio Lopez and Finkbeiner were on the court. Lopez had an early lead, but he dropped the first set 7-5. Finkbeiner, meanwhile was moving through his match at second singles. The Eastenr Freshman won 6-2, 6-1 to secure the match. Lopez wound up falling 7-5,6-4 in his final collegiate match.
"I was happy for the guys to get the win today," Head Coach
Mark Spangler said of the victory. "Ryan, Antonio, and
Andrew O'Brien have been good teammates for our younger guys. It was good to see James earn the point at the sixth spot. It is hard to win close matches when you lose two doubles points."
The Eagles finish the season fifth in the MAC Freedom standings.
