Eastern, the four-time defending Freedom Conference Champions, has a very different look this season. After graduating the three highest scoring attackmen in program history, the Eagles would have to reshape their attack. After some line-up juggling early in the year. The Eastern coaching staff moved
Tim Lamb to attack and teamed him with
Jake Pousson and
Mark Buannic. Lamb and the two freshmen have found their chemistry as of late. Buannic has 17 of his 31 goals against league opponents, and Pousson has had at least a goal or an assist in every game since the opener.
Lamb scored only twice in the first six games of the year. In the 12 games since, the junior has 42 goals and 57 points. He has 16 goals and eight assists in the four games against the three other teams in the MAC Freedom Tournament.
The Eastern defense returned several key players from the last few years, but even with
Tyler Gehlhaus and
Ryan Mitchell as returning starters, the Eagles would need to figure out the goalie position and to replace a pair of poles who had claimed Freedom Defensive Player of the Year recognition in the previous two positions.
Nick Jinks saw his role expand and when
Kadeem Colburn went down with injury,
Alex Becerra stepped into the starting line-up. Jinks earned second-team All-MAC Freedom recognition and Becerra earned honorable mention.
Jameal Hadeed has stopped over 60 percent of the shots on goal this spring. He is at 68 percent since starting league play. This is the first time in four years that the Eastern cage has not been manned by a senior. Hadeed was named to the MAC Freedom first team.
The Cougars visited St. Davids on April 16th. Eastern scored on the opening faceoff and held on for a 12-5 win. Lamb had three goals and an assist to lead the Eastern attack. Phillip Fraher scored twice to lead Misericordia.
Going into the final game of the regular season, Misericordia needed to beat Delaware Valley by more than two goals to even qualify for the post-season. The Cougars jumped out to a 9-3 edge on the Aggies, who had already qualified for the playoffs, and held on for an 11-7 win. Andrew Reynolds and Lane Kocovsky each scored three times in that win.
On Wednesday, the Cougars went to the fourth quarter tied at 5-5 at DeSales. Nick Kenna put Misericordia up with a little over nine minutes to play, but the host Bulldogs appeared to grab momentum with a goal out of a timeout with 3:11 on the clock. Reynolds won the ensuing faceoff and fed Lane Kocovsky for what would be the game-winner. Kocovsky set the Misericordia single-season goal record with that tally, his 47th of the year.
Reynolds, a dynamic all-around performer, missed eight games with injury. He wins 63 percent of his faceoffs and has 17 goals and nine assists in only eight games.
Josh Shanker has started every game in goal for the Cougars. He has a .532 save percentage and has allowed eight goals per game. The senior goalie is playing in his third MAC Freedom Championship game. He stopped four shots in a little over twenty minutes in relief in 2013. He stopped six shots in 21 minutes last season.
The winner of tomorrow's game will earn the league's automatic bid tot he NCAA Tournament.
