YORK, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Basketball closed out the game on a 16-7 run to beat the host York College Spartans, 64-5, in the Championship game of the Tenth Annual Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at York. Senior forward
Emily Lavin scored 23 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and blocked four shots to lead the Eagles to the win and earn tournament MVP honors.
It was not easy. The Spartans (2-1) came into today's game unbeaten and had a pretty sizeable crowd of supporters behind them.
Amanda Riiff hit the first shot of the game, a 3-pointer for an early lead and Eastern seemed in command eight minutes later when she made another for an 18-10 lead.
Lavin picked up a foul with 1:35 to play in the quarter and another one on an offensive foul 18 seconds later. The senior standout had two rebounds, a block, a steal, and seven points when she went to the bench with her team up 18-11.
"I thought we did a really good job defensively today," Head Coach
Eric Houston said after the game. "Even with Lav [Lavin] in foul trouble, we were able to contest shots and get rebounds."
A
Taylor Price 3-pointer gave the Eagles a brief 10-point edge early in the second quarter, but York cut the lead to five with Lavin still watching from the bench.
Regie Robinson scored in transition after a
Maya Harris stole the ball and pitched it ahead.
Lavin came into the game with six minutes to play in the half and her team up seven points. In the next three total possessions, she made a pair of free throws, gathered a defensive rebound, and made a short jumper. Houston elected to pull Lavin back out of the game with 3:44 on the clock.
Eastern outscored York 3-2 over the final 3:44 and went to the locker with a 34-23 lead. Eastern shot only 37.9 percent in the first half, but the Spartans hit only 8-of-30 in the opening 20 minutes. Though she only played nine minutes, Lavin led all scorers with 11 points.
Taylor Price had seven points and seven rebounds.
York outscored the Eagles 13-10 in the third period, but the Eagles still clung to an eight-point edge with ten minutes to play.
York made another push with an 8-4 run at the start of the fourth. To make matters worse for Eastern, Lavin was called for another offensive foul, her fourth foul of the afternoon, on the ensuing possession.
The rest of the Eagles stepped up. Robinson had a block, a rebound, and a pair of made free throws. Freshman guard
Kayla Holmes put the Eagles up nine with a 3-pointer. Price, Robinson, and
Brianna Young-Harris had grabbed defensive rebounds before Price hit another two free throws for a 55-44 lead with four minutes to play.
Lavin came back into the game and immediately made her presence felt when Robinson fed her at the rim. She then started a fast-break with a defensive rebound and outlet to the speedy Holmes. Lavin closed out the decisive 15-2 run with another two made free throws and a blocked shot and defensive rebound.
Riiff, who scored 23 points in the opening game of the tournament joined Lavin on the all-tournament team. Lavin scored 39 points, grabbed 23 rebounds, blocked nine shots and made 15-of-24 shots from the floor in the two day tournament. She made 9-of-11 foul shots while playing only 21 minutes in the championship game.
Price finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds and Robinson had eight points and nine rebounds.
The Eagles will continue their travels on Tuesday at Messiah College.
