Men's Basketball Clipped By Hawks

Box Score

SALEM, Va.--Eastern University Men's Basketball cut a double-digit second-half deficit down to one point with 7:33 remaining on Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the Roanoke College Cregger Classic.

The Eagles, however, couldn't completely close the gap and fell to the SUNY New Paltz Hawks 76-62.

Shaquan Turk led the Eagles with 12 points and 11 rebounds. He went 2-for-7 from the floor and a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. Turk earned a spot on the five-man all-tournament team. Tarek Hamzeh added 10 points off the bench. Hamzeh (3-for-7) and Austin James (3-for-13) were the only Eagles to make at least three field goals.

Eastern had a cold day from the floor, shooting a season-low 19-for-62 (30.6 percent) overall. From long distance, the Eagles shot 8-for-32 (25 percent). The Hawks shot 52.5 percent from the floor.

A day after recording a season-low in turnovers (8), the Eagles were dispossessed a season-high 21 times. The Eagles' defense succeeded in forcing SUNY New Paltz to commit 27 turnovers.

Eric Regenbogen led New Paltz with 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting and was one of four players in double-figures. Taylor Sowah added 15 points, Kevin Roach added 12 and R.J. Rosa contributed 10.

Eastern took a one-point lead with 4:46 remaining in the first half, but that lead, the only lead of the game for the Eagles, only lasted another possession. New Paltz regained the lead and with 11:41 left in the second half had extended the lead to 14 points, 51-47. The Eagles fought back and went on a 15-2 run over the next four minutes capped off by a Malcolm Garrison 3-pointer. The scorching run brought Eastern within one point, 53-52, with 7:33 remaining.

The Hawks responded with a 17-5 run over the next five minutes to make the game out of reach.

The Hawks improved to 3-6 while the Eagles dropped to 3-8 with the loss. Eastern returns to Pennsylvania for an 8 p.m. showdown at PSU-Brandywine on Wednesday.

Notes:

In the game's final minute, junior Aaron Wilcox, who was added to the roster this week, scored his first collegiate point.

The tournament was a homecoming for Eastern head coach Nate Stewart who played college basketball at Roanoke College from 1999-2003. Stewart reached the NCAA Tournament twice as a player there.
