ROSEMONT, Pa.—Eastern University Men's Basketball sophomore Shaquan Turk sank the go-ahead 3-pointer with 19.2 seconds remaining and then blocked a last-second Rosemont shot to secure the win for the Eagles on Wednesday night.
Eastern held on for the 61-60 win against the Rosemont College Ravens to earn its first win of the season. Three Eagles recorded double figures. Malcolm Garrison led all players with 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting. Turk added 14 points, three blocks and three steals, and Austin James recorded 10 points.
Rosemont jumped to a 13-6 lead, but the Eagles overtook them with 8:39 to play in the first half in the midst of a 7-0 run consisting of a Garrison 3-pointer and layup and a Turk fast-break two-handed dunk. The Eagles went into the half up five and built a 10-point second half lead. Eagles' head coach Nate Stewart said he thought that their run was fueled by their defensive intensity. However, Eastern's 10-point lead with 13:44 remaining in the game vanished as Rosemont went on 12-1 run over the next three minutes.
“They (the Ravens) turned their pressure up and they made a couple big shots too,” Stewart said. “They wore us down a little bit. We got bothered by their pressure. We tell the guys all the time that it's a game of runs. We called timeout and said that Rosemont made their run, now let's go on ours and we did a pretty good job of responding.”
The Eagles did respond and traded leads back and forth with the Ravens thanks to some big plays from Turk and from Jonathan Tolber off the bench. The two split Eastern's 11 points from 6:19 to 2:41.
Eastern trailed by two points but recovered the ball with 36 seconds to play. Turk received a pass from Austin Carroll just inside the 3-point line, sized up his defender, junked to his left and stepped back just behind the arc. He fired and made the go-ahead shot with 19.2 seconds left, giving Eastern the 61-60 lead but also leaving Rosemont with enough time on the clock to get the last shot. Rosemont guard Nadir Stukes dribbled the game clock down to five seconds before driving into the key. Stukes tossed up a floater from the left side of the key, but Turk soared across the paint and swatted the attempt out of harm's way and into Garrison's hands as time expired.
Turk was the happiest man in the building as the buzzer sounded. He said he felt relieved after hitting the 3-pointer and blocking the shot and that he would have been ready to take the blame if they had lost. “I wanted to put the team on my back because I was sleeping in the first half and wasn't playing to my abilities,” he said. “If we had lost this game, it would have been on me. I'm so happy we won this.”
Turk noted that when his play wasn't on, Malcolm Garrison was doing a great job of leading the team. "Malcolm played big, especially when I was in a slump,” he said. “He came up and made big shots time after time. He's a leader and we're going to need him to keep doing that if we want to win a conference championship.”
The Eagles (1-2) shot 50 percent from the floor in the win. They're back at home on Saturday when they host Neumann University at 1 p.m.
