ST.DAVIDS, Pa.- Eastern University Men's Tennis picked up it s
first league win of the 2013 campaign with a 6-3 home win over
Misericordia University. The Eagles took two doubles matches and won at
four of the top five singles spots to claim their sixth win of the
season.
Dan Fowler and Tyler Schultz picked up a huge win at the top doubles
spot. Up 7-6, Fowler served for the win. The game reached deuce, but the
Eagles' top tandem grabbed a point for the advantage and Schultz
finished the match with nice touch on a volley. Grant Williams and Codie
Todd were more efficient in their match to pick up the point with an 8-4 win at second
doubles.
The Eagles dropped the third doubles match and the first two singles
matches off the courts at No. 6 and No. 4, to fall behind 3-2 in the
match. Fowler brought the Eagles level with a 6-2, 6-3 win at the top
spot and minutes later, Williams put the Eagles up 4-3 with a 6-2, 6-0
win at the second spot.
"Dan was super-steady today," head coach Mark Spangler stated, "he did
not miss his shots and he hit several winners. It was a good match for
him."
The Eagles needed just one of two final points to secure the
win. Early on it appeared that Todd would would secure the critical
poiint as he jumped to a 6-2 win in the first set and was up in the
second, but Misericordia' Christian Puliese battled back to take the
second set. Todd jumped out to a big lead in the third set, but Pugliese
chipped away and forced a tiebreaker.
Midway through the
tiebreak at No. 5, Tyler Schultz, who had taken the courts considerable
later than Todd, finished his match at No. 3 6-3, 6-1. Todd won the
tiebreaker 7-1 for the sixth point.
The Eagles are at West Chester on the 25th before finishing their season at King's on the 27th.
