ST. DAVIDS, Pa.- Grant Williams picked up wins in both his matches,
but Eastern University Men's Tennis dropped a tough 7-2 home decision to
the College at Florham Devils.
During the week, head coach Mark
Spangler elected to shake up the doubles line-up, and in the early
going, it seemed to work as Williams and Codie Todd picked up an 8-2 win
at second doubles. The Eagles had started each of their last five
matches down 0-3 after doubles.
"I felt pretty good coming out of
the doubles," Spangler related, "Grant and Codie had good momentum and
we gave ourselves a chance to win with the point at two."
With
the match being played on two sets of courts, there was a delay in
learning scores on the other court, but four of the five singles matches
on Eastern's main courts went to three sets. The visiting Devils came
out on top of three of them.
Dan Fowler won his first set 6-2, but
he dropped the final two sets by 6-3 scores. After falling in his
opening set,Tyler Schultz rallied to level the match, but FDU's Ryan
Hurdes used a strong serve and volley game to take the third set 6-1.
Williams
picked up the win at second singles after dropping the second set 6-2.
The final set was on serve in the sixth game when Williams used a couple
big points to Break Ryan Kearns and open up a 4-2 lead in the match.
Williams took the final two games for the win.
