ST.DAVIDS, Pa.- Eastern University Men's Basketball shot a
season-best 58 percent from the floor on the way to an 82-70 non-league
win over the visiting Ursinus College Bears. Led by Malcolm Garrision's
20 points, all five Eastern starters finished in double-figure scoring.
The
Eagles (4-4) shot a sterling 64 percent in the opening half, including
12-of-14 from inside the arc, but the visiting Bears (1-7) hung around
with solid shooting of their own (11-of-24), ten free throws, and six
offensive rebounds. Two of those rebounds came on missed free throws
late in the period.
Eastern led 35-28 on a Garrison lay-in with
two minutes left in the half, but the Bears scored the last seven points
of the frame to tie the contest at 35-35. Garrison led all scorers with
12 first-half points. Pat Vasturia led Ursinus with 10 points. The
Eagles missed several chances to build a bigger lead with 5-of-10 foul
shooting and eight turnovers.
Ursinus grabbed a three point lead
early in the second half. Anthony Parenti responded with a short jumper
and a pair of free throws to put the Eagles up 46-45. Vasturia connected
from distance to give the Bears their final lead of the game. Caleb
Knudsen found a wide open Ben Connor for a game-tying lay-up and Parenti
put the Eagles up for good with a three-point play. Parenti finished
with 15 points.
The Eagles lead remained tenuous until Austin
Carroll sparked a 10-2 run with a 3-pointer midway through the period.
The first-year guard finished with 10 points, four assists, three
steals, and no turnovers in 32 minutes at the point.
After
struggling from the line in the early going, the Eagles found a home at
the stripe as the game drew to a close. Eastern made 22-of-25 free
throws in the final 16 minutes to hold the lead. Jordan Diggs was
8-of-8 from the line to lead the way.
Knudsen grabbed a game-high
10 rebounds to record his first career double-double. Vasturia led the
Bears with 18 points. Ursinus guard Jesse Krasna had nine assists in his
first action of the year.
The Eagles will break for Christmas and
will return to action with a pair of games in Miami over the New Year's
holiday. The Bears will travel to Hamilton, N.Y. to take on Colgate.
