ST. DAVIDS, Pa.- For the first 16 minutes against the
league-leading DeSales Bulldogs, everything was working for Eastern
University Men's Basketball. Led by Malcolm Garrison's 4-for-4 effort
from distance, the Eagles made six of their first seven 3-pointers and
held a 30-22 lead with 3:42 on the clock. The visiting Bulldogs closed
the deficit to one at the half and shot 58 percent from the floor in the
second half to earn a 77-62 win.
Eastern (3-14, 1-5 Freedom) trailed 10-7 before going on a 14-3 run to
grab an eight point lead. Garrison, who finished with 20 points, hit
three 3-pointers in the run, and the Eagles kept the DeSales offense on
the perimeter.
The Eagles kept the lead at eight until just under four minutes to play.
The Bulldogs (14-4, 6-0 Freedom) went on a 9-0 run to briefly grab the
lead before Tyler McGrath tipped in an Anthony Bertolino miss with time
running down. Paul Pammer made the big play of the run for DeSales with a
three-point play.
To hold a 32-31 lead at the break, the Eagles made 13-of-25 shots and
6-of-8 from distance. Garrison had 12 points to lead all scorers at
intermission. DeSales shot 56 percent from the floor and took 13 free
throws to only one for Eastern.
The game remained in question until the Bulldogs put together a 13-2 run
around the midway point of the second half. Brett Moyer and Andrew
Kohler scored three-point plays and Cody Deal hit a 3-pointer from the
corner. Deal made 4-of-7 threes in the game to finish with 14 points.
Off that run, DeSales executed its offense and made enough free throws to keep the Eagles from rallying.
Mike Coleman led DeSales with 20 and Pammer Michael Guldin had 12.Dan
Werth was the only other Eastern player in double-figures. he finished
with 10. DeSales made 21-of-32 foul shots. Eastern was only 2-of-8.
The Eagles take on Wilkes on Wednesday night. That game is the final
night of Eastern's Season of Impact Coat Drive. Anyone bringing a coat
for donation to City Team Ministries will get into the game for free.
