HOBOKEN, N.J.- Eastern University Women's Soccer fell lost a second straight road game against a top 20 opponent with a 3-0 loss at No. 15 Stevens Tech. After grabbing a 1-0 lead near the half-hour mark, the Ducks added two more in the second half to improve to 2-0 on the season.
While the Ducks had more of the play in the opening half, the Eagles were able to keep their hosts off the board for the first 29 minutes of play with solid defending and several good saves from senior goalkeeper Alysia Goodman. The Ducks broke through after an Eastern turnover with a good passing sequence on the right side that led to a Bridgette Barden finish.
Eastern found more of the possession to start the second half, but the Stevens Tech defense held things together and the Ducks found a goal in transition in the 57th minute. A long through ball put Ann Heine in behind the Eastern back line to double the lead.
"The second goal is tough," Head Coach Dan Mouw remarked, "though we struggled a bit early, as long as we stay within one, it's a game. To see it happen against the run of play like that grabs back any of the momentum we had found."
The third Stevens goal came on a ball crossed in from distance in the 73rd minute. Goodman came out to pick up the ball before realizing that she had crossed outside the penalty box. She changed plans mid-stride and attempted to clear the ball with her feet. Heine picked up the loose ball and scored her second.
"Today was a tough day," Mouw concluded, "They were strong, fast, and skilled, and they brought a lot more energy to the match than we did. We know that in order to beat teams in the upper echelon that we have to be able to put together a unified effort with everything working. That did not happen today and we lose. We train again tomorrow to try to get better."
The Eagles will host California Lutheran, another NCAA Tournament team from last year, on Saturday morning.
