ST. DAVIDS, Pa.- Eastern University Women's Soccer opened the home portion of its schedule with a tough 1-0 loss to California Lutheran University (2-1). The visiting Regals picked up a goal on a deflection in the fifteenth minute and made it hold up for the win.
The game started with the visitors in command of much of the ball. The Eagles, however, had the first and maybe best chance of the match in the tenth minute on an Amy Thomas corner kick. The serve caromed to Kelsey Doutrich in front of the Regal goal, but Kristin Bailey was in position and gobbled up Doutrich's shot from close range.
Less than five minutes later the Regals capitalized on their first corner of the game. Alysia Goodman was able to punch the initial serve to beyond the back post, but the ball found its way to Mayra Virgen. Goodman had recovered and was in position to make the save to her left on the shot from 12 yards out, but a deflection off an Eastern defender spun the ball against the footwork of the senior net-minder and she could only get a hand to the ball before it crossed the line.
Both teams had two more corner kicks in the opening half, but there were no more goals forthcoming as both back lines were able to keep attacking players from getting into dangerous positions in front of the goal.
The Eagles grabbed much more of the game in the second half, but the Eagles were unable to convert quality possession into the equalizer.
"I was pleased with our effort for the game," Head Coach Dan Mouw stated, "we had some flaws in execution, but the effort was good. When you play good teams, things are going to be tight. They came out with the win today. I felt our back line was very good in keeping their dangerous players in check, and this stretch of games will help us as we go forward."
The Regals, who finished 20-2-1 in 2011 and were ranked 16th in the NSCAA Preseason Poll, will travel up to New York to take on Farmingdale State. The Eagles (1-3) return to action at Cabrini College on Wednesday.
