Box Score DOYLESTOWN, Pa.--Two hours after Eastern Women's Basketball edged Delaware Valley College 68-65, Eastern Men's Basketball ended up on the wrong side of another three-point game, falling to the Aggies 69-66.
Despite the tough road loss, Eastern Men's Basketball seemed to have turned over a new leaf on Saturday, displaying aggressive rebounding, a controlled, balanced attack and all-around hard work that appeared to be lacking in recent games.
The hustle and hard work impressed Eagles coach Nate Stewart and provided hope for the now 1-5 Eagles of having a successful remainder of the season.
The Eagles committed a season-low 13 turnovers and out-rebounded the Aggies 41-36. Seniors
Tyler Stowers and
Kyle Malloy scored 14 and 13 points, respectively. Malloy pulled down 13 rebounds, including five offensive rebounds, for the first double-double of his collegiate career.
Eastern's bench contributed 26 points with freshman
Caleb Knudsen scoring 10 and classmate
Malcolm Garrison scoring eight.
Despite allowing the Aggies to take 19 free throws in the first half (compared to three free throws for the Eagles), the Eagles led 36-30 going into halftime. The Eagles built that lead by posting a 50 percent field goal effort in the first half. Eastern held Del Val to 29.2 percent shooting in the first half.
Eastern held onto a seven-point lead with 4:35 remaining in the game, but Del Val went on an 11-0 scoring streak capped off by an open 3-pointer by Daulton Derr with 1:30 left. With Eastern trailing 63-67,
Kyle Malloy made it a two-point game. The Aggies missed a 3-pointer on the next possession and
Anthony Parenti made 1-of-2 free throws to put Eastern within one, 66-67, with 21 seconds left.
Caleb Knudsen then intentionally fouled Del Val's Jay Donovan on the inbounds, and Donovan made his first free throw, but missed the second. Malloy secured the rebound and gave Eastern a chance to take the last shot. The Eagles called their final timeout at halfcourt with nine seconds to go. The Eagles were unable to get a good shot, and
Malcolm Garrison heaved a deep 3-pointer before time expired.
Del Val's Jeremy Beckett was fouled with 0.3 seconds left and made a foul shot to put the final score in Del Val's favor, 69-66.
Beckett led the Aggies with 20 points and 15 rebounds. Teammates Daulton Derr and Francis Arnold contributed 13 points and Jay Donovan added 10.
Neither team shot particularly well from the free-throw line with Del Val shooting 23-for-34 (67.6 percent) and Eastern shooting half as many attempts, going 10-for-17 (58.8 percent) and missing on the front-end of one-and-ones twice and having one free throw called back because of a lane violation.
Eastern goes right back to work on Monday, hosting The College of New Jersey at 7 p.m.
As part of the season of impact, fans are invited to bring an unwrapped toy to donate to Toys for Tots.
